PowerEdge R210 II Windows 2008 R2: If more than 3 external USB drives are connected, they stay offline.

PowerEdge R210 II Windows 2008 R2: If more than 3 external USB drives are connected, they stay offline.

I am pretty frustrated with some odd setting (or I don't know what) that is stopping me from have more than 3 external USB drives connected to my server.

The server pushes content to storage drives, currently network based SNAP servers, but I am migrating to External USB drives.

I have a PCIe USB board with 6 ports and I am using the two rear ports for the KVM and the other for one more drive (and once this issue is solved I may use the two front ports for two more drives...)

I have not posted here before, so I am not sure what I can provide (safely) in the way of system information.  Any help appreciated.

Obtaining Windows 2008 Standard FE?

Hello,

A client of ours has recently had their RAID array fail and we need to reinstall the OS. The system has an OEM CoA for Windows Server 2008 Standard FE (Foundation Edition), but we don't have any discs.

Considering that FE is OEM, it's probably like pulling teeth getting a copy of the software, but I'm curious if it's possible to do so.

Any feedback (and quickly) would be extremely helpful.

Thanks!

T320 - Windows Server 2008R2 as a Hyper-V VM?

Dell T320 running Windows Server 2012R2 with Hyper-V installed.

I need to run two VMs on the server, one Windows Server 2008R2 and one Windows Server 2012R2.  When the server was purchased from Dell, Dell included the Windows Server 2008R2 downgrade kit (two physical and two virtual product keys).  Can I use one of those product keys for the Windows Server 2008R2 VM?  If yes, do I use a virtual or physical product key?

Thanks

Need IPMI Information

$

I already have the BMC user's guide, and have my BMC set up.  What I need and can't find anywhere is User "How To" information on the IPMI utilities.  I've downloaded and installed the "ipmiutil" on two computers; one a Workstation joined to the server's domain and an independent computer on the network (not joined to the domain) but for the life of me I can't make them work.  I need to be able to have the IPMI on the workstation start the server.  Here's the scenario:

My wife and I operate a (2 person) online background screening operation, which uses the server for, among other things, our databases.  We have to travel often on business, and while we're away we operate via RDS/RDG to our two workstations which are joined to the server's domain.  In the event of a power failure the workstations will automatically restart when power returns, but the server (a PowerEdge T110 II) doesn't seem to have that capability.  We can, however, access one of our workstations via LogMeIn and restart the server via IPMI/BMC.  Unfortunately we've yet been able to make the IPMI work, and that's where I need the help.

Performance effect of NTFS Compression on Network

Hi all

A minor problem that I'd love to find an answer for, just for reliability reasons.

System:  Dell R320 server with Windows 2012 R2 Essentials.  RAID1 SATA disks with a H310 controller, no write-back cache. Cisco small business grade switch.

Originally I stumbled on an issue where I was getting terrible write performance over the network (<1Mb/s) when writing large files (eg 5Gb) from client to server.  After a bit of reading, I changed the Disk Cache Policy to Enabled on the controller and now the same operation is lightning fast.

However, I since discovered a minor caveat.  Consider this:

  •     An uncompressed 5Gb file is written from a client PC to the server over the network
  •     The destination on the server is an NTFS compressed folder
  •     There is no perceived CPU bottleneck on the server during write (ie <10% total utilization)
  •     Network utilization on the server appears to not be saturated during transfer
  •     Another PC playing a .WAV file across the network from a different uncompressed server location will experience audio "stuttering" at the same time
  •     There is no "stutter" when the same scenario is repeated writing to a non-compressed folder.

I would like to solve is the "stutter" on other desktops.  Obviously turning off compressed folders is a fix, but I'd like to understand the root cause to eliminate potential reliability problems as best I can.

My thoughts do come back to Disk Controller performance.  I had the same "stutter" issue during BOTH compressed and uncompressed writes BEFORE changing the Disk Write Cache policy to Enabled.  But in my mind there is something else not right.  Both writes now have noticeably better network throughput than before and server resources appear to be unstressed so I can't explain why compression is having such an effect, and is it a hardware or OS issue.

I'm going to play with the network adapter properties and driver updates and see what happens, but I'd love some other suggestions and if anyone has seen something like this before!

PowerEdge r410 VMWare ESXi 5.5 U2

According to VMWare's website, 5.5 U2 is compatible with the R410

If I go to download the customized dell iso - the r410 is listed as compatible on the U1 download page but NOT on the U2 per Dell.

In short, who do I believe as I would like to have U2 running on the R410's that I have - I have two of them.

Thank you.

Keep seeing the error cant find bootable device

Hi,

I am trying to boot my Dell R310 server with CD/DVD drive. However it does not boot and gives an error saying cant find bootable device. I went inside the BIOS settings and make sure CD/DVD is selected but still it keeps on giving the same error. I am trying to install RHEL ISO.

I tried to deploy OS by going inside the Unified server configuration and select local USB, CD/DVD and click next it gives me an error no volume available for  local repository. I configured the RAID and it shows the RAID volume as well. But it still does not boot. It says can’t find boot device. It seems I am missing something in the boot configuration.

Could you please help?

I am trying to install Server 2008 R2  Standard on a PE2970 and cannot get past the search for drivers. I assume the install is looking for the PERC drivers but after downloading and trying every 5i and 6i driver RAID and non RAID, available I am still stuck.

What drivers is it looking for?

set up webGUI (CIMC) on Dell server

Hi Guys,

I am new to Dell servers and i cant find much documentation on it. If i need to set up a CIMC on the server to manage it remotely. Can i set up a LOM port similar to what we do in UCS.  I have one of the Dell servers and i tried to set up the LOM port by going into the remote management and set up the ip address however that ip address is not reachable. Is there any document which i can follow or specific instructions. I was thinking what went wrong if we have right network info set up on the dell server and on the uplink.

I appreciate your inputs.

Thanks

Exchange 2007 no inbound mail...

Something strange occured this morning on our primary mail server.  Around 10:30 a.m.....we lost all inbound mail flow.  Outbound and internal mail continues to flow as of this email but inbound messages are not delivering to the Mailstore/Mailboxes with no indication as to why.  We utilize a Native POP3 connector to dip into our external mail systems and this has worked flawless up until this a.m.  Has anyone run into a similar situation and what was the resolution?  We are running Exchange 2007 sp1 on Windows Server 2008 standard.

VMware ESXi 5 migration to 5 update 3

We are looking for some assistance in upgrading a VMWare ESXi environment from version 5 to version 5 update 3. Dell T610 Servers, I checked compatibility already all appears to be good. The BIOS issue is just an example of a good check list. We do NOT have vCenter, only ESXi and vSphere.

Our staff has reviewed the Update Guides, but they provide very little information with regard to the process or check list to be performed prior to an upgrade. For example, checking compatible BIOS versions. I would like to hope that this transition is as simple as popping in a new DVD and firing off the install., but I have been in the industry too long to believe that to be the case.

If anyone has any experience on this migration, notes on do's and dont's or gotcha's, I'd live to hear about them.

thanks for any all feed back. Oh and any further links or documents would be appreciated.

Under Control Panel->Device Manager I;m seeing Other Devices->Base Device missing driver

PCI VEN_8086 DEV_2F6E and various other DEV_2Fxx

I know vendor is Intel (8086) but can't find what the 2Fxx devices are.

Went to PCIDevices to look 8086 & 2f6E. Nothing for 2Fxx devices.

I updated the Device Drivers from the Dell site, but it doesn't find anything.

Any ideas?

my company has a Dell PowerEdge 2800 with Windows Server 2003 that, according to the service tag, is out of warranty. I have a certificate of authenticity, but we do not have recovery disks and we need to reinstall the OS. Is there a way I can download the ISO so that I can install it using my legitimate product key?

Server 2012 R2 - Unable to shutdown after adding to domain

$

Hi All,

I have a Windows Server 2012 R2 virtual machine on ESXi 5.5. When I add it to the domain and it asks for a reboot, I the click reboot and it sticks at 'Notifying services that Windows is shutting down'. I have many Server 2012 vms on the domain that work well.

I have forcefully shutdown, the event viewer after the event doesn't show any issues. Subsequent shut downs stop at the same message. i even left it to run over a whole weekend and it didn't move past this message.

Does anyone know any reasoning for this.

David
